Here, the visitor is treated to emerald green sea, dense, uncontaminated forests on imposing mountains, and silent heathlands, over which ancient, mystery-laden nuraghi keep watch. Cala Gonone is the privileged custodian of one of the most beautiful and attractive coastlines in the Mediterranean, almost certainly the longest without human settlements (perhaps because only accessible by sea), thus preserving its virginal integrity.

These few lines which I am writing to you represent more than just a historical testament to the reopening for worship of our renovated and enlarged parish church; they are an act of love to the most blessed Mary, Mother of Christ, who, before being honoured by the titles of Our Lady of the Sea and Our Lady of Bonaria, was always considered the protectress of our village, and called by many of our friends “The Beautiful One”.

A dreams coast: the Orosei gulf.

A  cruise around the gulf.

The Orosei gulf is located an the east coast of the island of Sardinia  , between the Punta nera (north) and the Capo di Monte Santu (south). A very sharp geological   division separates this gulf in two differents  regions. Their landscapes are different regions. Their landscapes are different  as well as the origin of their territories..

For those who prefer the facilities offered by a ship I order to visit the gulf, there are modern ferries, which leave from the small harbor almost all year round. The first beautiful scenes one can enjoy, right after the cala fuili beach, are the two big arch entrances to be the Bue Marino  caves. The ferry boats carry tourists all the way up to that place. Once they arrive, they get off and continue on foot on a guided tour.

Hidden treasures: the caves.    

The arts and crafts Dorgali’s microcosm is a real universe full of colors, techniques, knowledge, shapes and  taste. Due to increasing tourist visits, it has been naturally displayed in an elegant way along the streets of the town.
There , one can find many gracious and fascinating shop windows.

They are fine natural works of art created through millions of years by the corrosive  action of the water . they preserve marvelous natural scenarios and are located in the surrounding of Dorgali and along cala gonone coast. They constitute a true Mecca for submarine world lovers. Their speleological  variety can fulfill the expectations of the most demanding visitor.  

Towards the north: the beaches of Cartoe and Osalla.

A trip between nature and culture.

At the north of cala gonone two very fine sand beaches can be reached by car:  Cala Cartoe and Osalla. It is necessary to take the street behind the camping  site towards the Pass of Littu. The dirt road at the panoramic square must be left on one’s right, going ahead through the curves, to reach the pass.

This is a vast territory , which hosts very diverse environments from the uninhabited Supramonte wide areas to the smooth grape cultivated valleys to end with the Gollei basalt high plateaus where pasture, grape and olive plantations mix with each other.

Heading p towards Dorgali , right after the tunnel under the mountain, it is necessary to turn to the left- direction Baunei – and right after  turn to the right , down in the oddoene valley. Once the small bridge over  S’abba Arva has been crossed , right after it is necessary to turn to the right and about 200 m .a square will be reached. The tiscali path starts right there. It takes around two hours to reach the top of the tiscali mount, walking through oak-trees woods and coal heaver paths.

Ancient pagan rites still mix with the sings of the catholic religious traditions, festivals of classic and modern music with the participation of famous international artists, together with  some minor activities, especially during summer time. Make stay in this place full on fun. The fuoco di sant’antonio  (“St. Anthony’s fire”), which has been held punctually after many centuries, on the 16th of January,

Culinary traditions
 

From the archeological point of view , the Dorgali and cala gonone territories constitute a vast open book. One can read about mysterious traces left by peoples and  civilizations who, in the past , lived on the island.

The millenary agricultural and shepherds tradition in barbagia (where Dorgali is located at ) is shown in its flavors at the tables of restaurants and agritourism structures I town. They are preserved in the ancient gastronomic knowledge. Genuine menus made of sea food and different types of meat , full of fresh products are professionally prepared by town cooks.

How to get

Leave a comment about your stay in Cala Gonone.

  • Get out from the airport and turn left towards Nuoro – Sassari.

  • Continue for about 2 km following Sassari. Then turn on your right SS131DCN in direction of Nuoro – Cagliari.

  • After about 75 km take the exit towards Bitti, Lula, Orosei and Dorgali.

  • Follow on the SP38 the indications to Dorgali.
