Una crociera nel Golfo.

Per chi preferisce la comodità di una visita del golfo a bordo di un ' imbarcazione, dal porticciolo partono moderni traghetti che assicurano, per gran parte dell' anno, il servizio di trasporto. Il primo spettacolo che si scorge navigando, dopo la spiaggia di Cala Fuili, sono i due ampi ingressi ad arco delle Grotte del Bue Marino. I traghetti trasportano i turisti sino all' ingresso, dove proseguiranno la visita guidata a piedi. A poca distanza dalle grotte si trova una spiaggetta di sabbia fine chiamata Zio Santoru. Non sempre le mareggiate ricreano l' arenile che che hanno spazzato via durante l ' inverno, ma qualora si potesse approdare, sarà interessante visitare la grotta pensile che si affaccia sul mare. Ancora mezzo miglio e si raggiunge la spiaggia di Cala Luna, qui, la falesia calcarea appare traforata da sei enormi caverne che si aprono sulla spiaggia e termina per lasciare spazio al vallone che ha generato l' arenile.

La meravigliosa duna di sabbia e ciottoli unisce la parete dei grottoni al maestoso roccione di Su Masongiu, spettacolare oltre oltre che per l' altezza, per i blocchi di roccia squadrati che precipitano in mare, hanno formato la Punta Lastroni. Appena dietro la duna di sabbia, un fitto bosco di oleandri si colora di rosa nei mesi estivi.
Superata la Punta Lastroni  la parete rocciosa continua alta a strapiombo sul mare, sino ad un' altra spiaggia di codula, chiamata Cala Sisine. Le alte pareti aperte sull' arenile conferiscono a questo luogo un singolare aspetto di montagna, accresciuto dalla foresta sulle pareti della gola con i suoi secolari alberi di carrubo e leccio. A differenza di Cala Luna, qui il torrente non riemerge se non durante le piene invernali. Tutte le spiagge che seguono, hanno avuto origine da frane rocciose o detritiche, che il mare ha lavorato nei secoli, sino a formare le dune di minuscoli ciottoli, che conferiscono al fondale gli stupendi colori nelle varie tonalità dell' azzurro e del verde.
La spiaggia di Cala Biriola con il suo archetto di roccia naturale, è sovrastata da un immenso bosco, che nel secolo scorso forniva legname da opera e carbone per l' esportazione. Si conservano ancora nascosti nella macchia, i sentieri dei carbonai e sulla scogliera sporgono i binari che facilitavano il trasporto del carico sui velieri. Cala Mariolu appare con due insenature separate da un candito promontorio di roccia, proteso su un fondale limpido colore azzurro.
A poca distanza la Cala dei Gabbiani, racchiude uno specchio di mare dalle incredibili trasparenze, dal quale affiorano piccoli scogli di bianchissima roccia. Cala Goloritzè, è caratterizzata da un magnifico pinnacolo di roccia sovrastante la spiaggia, un vero totem per gli arrampicatori che dall' alto dei 140 m. possono godere del più esclusivo panorama sul golfo.
Doppiato il grande arco di roccia accanto alla spiaggia, si prosegue sino alla punta estrema di Capo Monte Santu, ammirando il volo dei Falchi della Regina che nidificano numerosissimi sulle alte pareti verticali. La crociera si chiude con la visita delle ultime due insenature, due piccoli fiordi che si addentrano nella montagna offrendo riparo dai venti di tramontana.

 A  cruise around the gulf

For those who prefer the facilities offered by a ship I order to visit the gulf, there are modern ferries, which leave from the small harbor almost all year round. The first beautiful scenes one can enjoy, right after the cala fuili beach, are the two big arch entrances to be the Bue Marino  caves. The ferry boats carry tourists all the way up to that place. Once they arrive, they get off and continue on foot on a guided tour.

Not far away from those caves one  finds a small sand beach called Ziu Santoru. It is not full of sand every year after the rough winter sea, but if it is possible to reach it , it is very interesting to visit the hanging cave which faces the sea. Just after half a mile, cala Luna can be reached, here the limestone walls exhibit six huge caverns open at the beach level. The existing sand beach has been created by the stream. The beautiful sand and pebbles beach connect the caverns walls with the majestic Su Masongiu mountain. It is spectacular because of its height and it’s square rock blocks, called Punta lastroni, which lead all the way down to the sea. Just after the beach thick oleander bushes become beautifully pink during summer months. The stream, which used to make a lake behind the beach, ran until 1996. Very rough sea lost some meters of length. However, large fresh water puddles can be seen when one climbs the canyon.   

Once Punta Lastroni is behind, the rock wall slopes reach steeply to the sea. Right after, one can find the beach called Cala Sisine. The tall and open walls on the beach make one think of mountain scenarios, especially because of the forest on the walls of the George , full of century old carob and holm oak trees, contrary to cala Luna, the water stream here does not reach the ground except for  winter  floods. All the following beaches were made by land-slips or rock sweepings, which have been in touch with the sea water though the centuries to form dunes of very small pebbles , giving the bottom of the sea beautiful blue and green colors.

Cala Biriola beach has a natural rock arch and huge forest. During the last century,  it was exploited for  its wood and  coal for exportation . The paths used by coal-heavers are still preserved in the vegetation.

On the reefs one can still find the railway tracks to transport and load the coal onto the ships.

Cala Mariolu beach is divided  into two different sides by a rock promontory surrounded by limpid blue water colors. Not far way , cala dei Gabiani surrounds incredible transparent sea waters , which  are full of small white reefs. Goloritzè beach has a magnificent  rock tower , a real 140 m , tall totem for climbers ,who can get the most  exclusive panorama of gulf from there.

Leaving behind the big rock arch which is beside the beach , one can reach the end of capo Monte Santu. From there  one can admire Leonora’s’ falcons (falchi della regina), which nest on those vertical rock walls.

The cruise is over once the last two bays have been visited. There, one finds two small  fjords which lead to the  mountains and offer protection against the northern winds (tramontana).
